"We're not supposed to beat Australia," West Indies captain said on the widening gulf between the two teams
It happened as everyone thought it would — West Indies were completely outplayed by Australia, a team they are "not supposed to beat," as Hayley Matthews put it, but not for lack of talent or will.
"Every single person in the dressing room trains really hard and wants to get better. A lot of the time we tend to be competing against teams like Australia who, realistically based on systems and opportunities, we're not supposed to beat," Matthews said.
"If we want to stop seeing a dependence on players like myself, it starts from the ground up — programmes in place for young girls to learn to play cricket and develop from a young age."
Matthews argued that the results on the field are making the funding discrepancy too stark to ignore, pointing to pathway systems in Australia that produce players like Phoebe Litchfield year after year.
